Upper Coast Basin: Offsite Mitigation

Upper Coastal Basin: Offsite Mitigation

The Upper Coastal Mitigation Bank serves as a sanctuary for a variety of wetland ecosystems, which are home to several species of frogs and freshwater turtles. These conserved areas play a vital role as ecological corridors for the vulnerable Florida black bear population. Additionally, the bank safeguards numerous natural springs, contributing to the health of the adjacent Homosassa River—an important tourist attraction and economic asset for the region.
Credits for ecological restoration from Upper Coastal Mitigation Bank are sanctioned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to meet the mitigation stipulations outlined in Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. These credits also have the approval of the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) for compliance with the Environmental Resource Permit (ERP) Program.
