What is a mitigation bank service area?
This is a statewide layer representing Mitigation Bank Service Areas identified in Mitigation Bank Permits issued under Ch. 373.4136, Florida Statutes by DEP or a Water Management District. Each Mitigation Bank Permit identifies a geographic area served by the permitted mitigation bank. Mitigation banking is a practice in which an environmental enhancement and preservation project is conducted by a public agency or private entity (banker) to provide mitigation for unavoidable wetland impacts within a defined region (mitigation service area-this data layer).
How to use the service area map
Zoom or search to your project site. Each shaded area on the map is the permitted service area of a mitigation bank: the geographic region where that bank's credits can generally be used to offset unavoidable wetland impacts. If your impact site falls inside a bank's service area, that bank is usually a candidate for your project. If several service areas overlap your site, you may have more than one option to compare.
State and federal service areas
In Florida, mitigation banks may be permitted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) or a Water Management District under the state program, and approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the federal program. A bank's state and federal service areas are not always the same, so the area that applies depends on which permits your project needs. What if no bank serves my site?
