2025 Polk Landowner Expo Recap: What Florida Landowners Learned About Conservation and Mitigation Opportunities
There’s something really special about being in a room full of people who care deeply about the land—not just as an asset, but as a legacy.
At this year’s Polk Landowner Expo, I had the privilege of joining a lineup of passionate speakers and sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with Florida’s agricultural community. This event was a gathering of ranchers, citrus growers, consultants, and conservation professionals, all exploring the same big question: How can we protect what makes Florida unique while keeping land productive and financially viable?
Hosted at Warner University’s Agriculture Complex, the event was designed to serve landowners directly—no fluff, no vague policy talk. Just real, tangible information from folks who know the challenges firsthand.
A Room Full of Landowners, Questions, and Possibilities
When I took the stage just before lunch, I asked how many attendees owned more than 10 acres… then 50, 100, 200. Nearly every hand went up. These weren’t theoretical landowners. These were working landowners, folks whose families have cared for Florida’s open spaces for generations.
And they’re not looking to sell out or give up their land. They’re looking for tools—smart options that let them protect their acreage, maintain agricultural use, and leave something behind that matters.
That’s where mitigation banking and species conservation programs come in.
Making Mitigation Banking Work for Landowners
I shared how mitigation banking isn’t just about compliance or permits. It’s about turning conservation into a practical, income-generating option when it’s done right.

But the day wasn’t just about mitigation. We heard from experts on gopher tortoise recipient sites, sand skink conservation, restoration finance, and the mechanics of conservation easements.
There were stories shared, not just stats. Landowners asked about restoring mined land, stacking conservation programs, and how to navigate partnerships when several neighboring families own different parcels. The energy was collaborative, curious, and grounded in a deep love for Florida’s land.
It’s clear that people want to protect their property, but they also want to do it in a way that makes sense for their families and operations. Events like this help fill in the gaps and offer trusted starting points.

There’s a lot of confusion out there when it comes to land conservation programs. Misinformation, complex permitting, and unclear financial models can make good opportunities feel out of reach.
That’s why the Polk Landowner Expo is such a powerful example of what can happen when experts and landowners come together with a shared purpose.
We left with more than just knowledge—we left with connection, momentum, and a better understanding of what’s truly possible when you manage land with both conservation and economic sustainability in mind.
