Lake Jesup BMAP Update: What It Means for Florida’s Water Quality
As part of our ongoing commitment to clean water and ecosystem restoration, I recently joined environmental experts, regional leaders, and engaged citizens at the March 2025 Basin Management Action Plan (BMAP) meeting focused on the restoration of Lake Jesup and surrounding watersheds.
At the heart of the discussion was the Lake Jesup BMAP Update, presented by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Division of Environmental Assessment & Restoration, and other technical experts. Their focus: reducing nitrogen and phosphorus pollution to meet water quality standards by July 1, 2025.

Lake Jesup Basin Management Action Plan Update
Collaboration at Every Level
From municipal governments to regional water management districts and volunteer stakeholders, the BMAP process is built on strong partnerships. Winter Springs is proud to have a seat at the table, and I’m honored to represent both the City of Winter Springs and MBG in advocating for effective, science-backed solutions.
Protecting Our Waterways
The updated BMAP outlines several initiatives to improve water quality in the Lake Jesup watershed, including:
- Enhanced wastewater treatment
- Reduction of urban and agricultural stormwater runoff
- Use of innovative modeling tools to better predict and manage nutrient loading
These restoration efforts support MBG’s broader mission of restoring impaired ecosystems and protecting Florida’s wetland functions through mitigation banking and collaborative conservation.
Planning for the Future
With population growth expected through 2040, aligning development with sustainability is more important than ever. The BMAP’s data-driven framework ensures that long-term infrastructure decisions account for both environmental and community health.

FDEP has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency. All materials from these BMAP meetings are available to the public, and residents, landowners, and stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed and get involved.
